Thursday 20th October: 8pm Bedford Park Society Betjeman Lecture
FIND out about the artistic movement which influenced the building of Bedford Park. Stephen Calloway, curator of the V&A¹s exhibition The Cult of Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement 18601900, is giving this year¹s Betjeman lecture in St Michael and All Angels Church, Bath Road, W4, at 8.00pm on October 20th.
A flamboyant character, Stephen is noted for dressing in the Aesthetic style, which reflects his deep interest in this era. He is Curator of Prints in the World & Image department of V&A, as well as researching, writing and lecturing on the cultures of romanticism, decadence and dandyism.
Founded in 1875, the Bedford Park estate was built near Turnham Green station to attract ³the aesthetic middle-classes² who couldn¹t afford Chelsea. Eminent architects such as William E Godwin and Richard Norman Shaw contributed to the design of 356 houses, now Grade II listed as the world¹s first garden suburb. This will be a fascinating and illuminating evening. Tickets, price £7.50, will be available at the church door from 7.30pm onwards.
The Betjeman lecture is held by the Society every year in honour of its first patron, Sir John Betjeman, with part of the proceeds going to Cure Parkinson¹s Trust, as Sir John suffered from Parkinson¹s Disease.
