During Evensong on Palm Sunday there will be a performance of Britten’s Canticle 2 (op 51). This two-person opera portrays the most dramatic moment in the life of Abraham, the binding and near-sacrifice of his beloved son Isaac, in obedience to God.Britten wrote the canticle in 1952 basing it on the Chester Miracle plays. It lasts about 20 minutes and provides a fitting meditation as we enter into Holy Week.
