What is Confirmation? We become Christians and members of the Church at our Baptism. Confirmation is a continuation and unfolding of its meaning, as we reaffirm our Baptismal promises and say 'yes' to God. Confirmed Christians are then able to share in Holy Communion
Candidates are prepared for Confirmation through instruction on courses specifically tailored either for youngsters (usually aged between 10 and 15 years) or adults. At St Michael's our annual Confirmation service usually takes place in late January or early February and preparation classes run weekly from October until just prior to the Confirmation date with a break over the Christmas holiday. Adult classes are usually arranged for a weekday evening and youngsters' classes take place during Sunday morning Mass
In 2009/10 the adult course was entitled 'Emmaus: the Way of Faith' and was open to all with an interest in exploring the Christian faith, including those already confirmed (see course description below)
Father Stephen Stavrou, Assistant Curate, (see People at St Michael's) described the course as follows:
'Emmaus: the Way of Faith' is a series of sessions about the Christian Faith intended for three diffferent types of people: for those preparing for Confirmation, for those enquiring about Christianity, and for Christians who would like to deepen and refresh their faith.
The sessions, on Thursday evenings, lasted just over an hour with refreshments. There were also 2 additional events, a Study Day in December, and a visit to Westminster Abbey that included attendance at Choral Evensong, a private tour and drinks reception in early January.
The sessions, run by Fr. Stephen, involved a mixture of open discussion, thought provoking input and personal reflection.
If you are interested in joining a similar group in 2010/2011 or would like further information about adult Confirmation contact Father Stephen or Father Kevin via the Parish Office (see below)
In 2009/10 the Young Person's Course took place during part of the Sunday 10am Mass and was run by Anne Mower assisted by Charlotte Isted. In order to be confirmed youngsters needed to attend the majority of the 11 sessions. There were also three additional events; a Discovery trail round St Michael's followed by a group pizza outing in November, a visit to St Paul's Cathedral on January; and a rehearsal for the Confirmation service on the day before.
If you are interested in having your child confirmed in 2011 or if you would like more information please contact Anne Mower or Father Stephen Stavrou via the Parish Office
