Lent at St Michael & All Angels 2010

At St Michael & All Angels, we mark Lent in a variety of ways - in services and outside (scroll down for more details of each activity):

- Lent Lunches: Lunch in homes or the Parish Hall to raise money for our Lent Appeal.
- Delighting in God: During Lent we focus on the theme of prayer and creativity, and will be making use of all that is on offer to us in London through the Arts to inspire and guide us on our Lenten journey (see below for details).
- Lent Sermons: A Sunday morning sermon series focusing on how we pray the Eucharist (see below for details)
- On My Desert Island: at Evensong, 6.30pm Sundays, members of the congregation give personal reflections on faith and the arts (see below for details)
- Courses, Reflection and Prayer (see below for details)
- Meditations on the Stations of the Cross:

Delighting In God

During Lent we focus on the theme of prayer and creativity and make use of all that is on offer to us in London through the Arts, to inspire and guide us on our Lenten journey.

LITERATURE: British Library: Monday 22nd February
A tour of the historic manuscripts at the Ritblat, with manuscript expert and ordinand, Dr Alun Ford.
Cost:free. Meet at Turnham Green tube station at 10am

MUSIC: Handel House Museum: Friday March 5th
A tour of Handel's London home (25 Brook Street) where he composed Messiah and Zadok the Priest, with a recital featuring a period harpsichord and singer. We will also visit the neighbouring St George's Church, Hanover Square, where Handel was the organist
Cost:£12.50 (inc tour of house and recital). Meet at St Michael's church at 10am

THEATRE: The Globe Theatre and Southwark Cathedral: Thursday March 11th
A tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the Exhibition and a walk along the Embankment to Southwark Cathedral
Cost: £9.50 (£8 concessions). Meet at Turnham Green tube at 10am

ARCHITECTURE: Sir John Soane's Museum: Thursday 18th March
A visit to the home and museum of the 18th century architect Sir John Soane followed by a tour of the historic buildings and legal centre of Lincoln's Inn. After lunch we will visit the famous church of St Alban, Holborn.
Cost: £5. Meet at Turnham Green tube at 10.30am

PAINTING: The Courtauld Institute: Thursday 25th March
A tour of The Courtauld Institute's collection, led by Fr Kevin and Sarah Lenton.
Cost: £5 (£4 concessions). Meet at Turnham Green tube at 10.30am

Lent Sermons

A Sunday morning sermon series focusing on how we pray the Eucharist.
The Eucharist is at the centre of the worshipping life of the Church. This series will seek to address questions such as: What does the Eucharist mean for my daily life? How can I enter into worship more deeply? How can I better understand what it is we are doing on Sunday morning?

Lent Charity Appeal

Throughout 2010, St Michael & All Angels will be supporting three charities: the Upper Room; the Lamb Project in Bangladesh; and USPG, Anglicans in World Mission. The income from the Lent Appeal will be divided equally between them.

Lent Lunches

During Lent, we traditionally hold a series of Sunday lunches in the homes of parishioners or the Parish Hall to raise money for our Lent charity appeal. The lunches are simple, but highly enjoyable, and people of all ages are welcome, from 12.45pm.
Those attending make a donation to the project.

Courses, Reflection and Prayer

Seeing Jesus - led by Father Neil Evans, Honorary Curate
This four session Lent course will offer an oportunity to explore how we see Jesus today: in community and relationships; in Church; in work, leisure and retirement; and in suffering
Wednesdays: 24 February, 3,17,24 March

The Eucharist - led by Sarah Lenton, subdeacon
"The Eucharistic Prayer is the holiest part of the Mass." But what are we doing in this most holy part of the service? Or, more to the point, what do we think God is doing? The answer will take us back to the house churches in Palestine, some villas in Rome, the Byzantine court, the great medieval cathedrals, the Reformation, the Council of Trent, Vatican II, and return to current belief and practice in W4.

Daily Office
Come and join the Church's regular daily cycle of prayer, which takes place before Mass. 9am Sundays, 5.30pm Mondays, 12 noon Wednesdays, 9.30am Thursdays and 9.30am Saturdays.
