Biography
Tingshuo Yang is a pianist, organist, and composer. Born in China in 2004, he showed an early passion for music. He studied piano in the United Kingdom, from 2012 until 2016, at the Royal College of Music Junior Department and in the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg from 2017 until 2021. Tingshuo was awarded a music scholarship to Eton College in 2018. Since 2023, he has been organ scholar at St John’s, studying for a BA degree in music.
Tingshuo achieved an LRSM in piano performance in 2016, the ‘Diplome de Concert’, and the ‘Prix du Meilleur Laureat’ at the Conservatoire in 2021. In April 2019, he made his solo piano debut with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, and he was invited to be the opening performer of the recital series ‘Young Luxembourgish Classical Talents’ in Berlin in 2020. His debut piano album, J.S. Bach: Clavieruebung Part I: Partitas, was released on Luxembourg Classics in June 2024 to critical acclaim. In early July, it became the album of the week on Radio 100,7 in Luxembourg and received outstanding reviews from industry leading media, such as Pizzicato, which described the recordings as ‘timelessly beautiful’ and ‘spontaneously creative’, and hailed by Luc Boentges for its transparent nature, especially when dealing with the polyphony.
As an organist, Tingshuo was Highly Commended in the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition in the Summer of 2023 and 2024 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists in 2025. He is an active recitalist and looks forward to making his London debut at St John’s Smith Square in 2025.
Tingshuo is also an active composer, having won first prize in the D’Overbroekes composition competition, come runner up in the RCO Composition Competition and Homerton College Composition Competition (2025), and was shortlisted for the BBC/NCEM Young Composers Award in 2024 and the Charles Wood Composers’ Competition in 2025. Tingshuo also has a passion for new music and has given premieres of works by Claude Lenners, Anna Semple, and Edward Picton-Turberville in the past academic year. He looks forward to giving premieres by Errollyn Wallen and Cecilia McDowall, and to commissioning new works in the coming academic year.
Tingshuo has had the great privilege to receive regular guidance from Geoffrey Govier, Jean Muller, Jenny Stern, Joseph Middleton, Philip Scriven, Colin Walsh, Martin Baker, Claude Lenners, and Raymond Yiu. He has participated in masterclasses with Nathan Laube, Ludgar Lohmann, Katelyn Emerson, and Andrew Dewar. He also worked with David Hill as the organ scholar of the Charles Wood Festival in Armagh in 2023 and 2024.
