At the 1911 census, the family other than Frank still lived in Stoke.\u00a0\u00a0It seems that Edwin Senior will have died by 1924, but his widow Mary Ann, and the unmarried Hilda Muriel remained at Flanders Road until the early 1930s.<\/p><p>We do not know when Frank will have enlisted for service after the outset of the War.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and was posted to 44th Field Ambulance, a unit that served with the 14th (Light) Division.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Field Ambulances were mobile front-line units, each unit had responsibility for the care of casualties within one of the Brigades in the Division, with a capacity of about 150 casualties, taking them from Regimental Aid Posts, and organising Bearer Relay Posts to transfer to Advanced Dressing Station behind the lines.<\/p><p>The 44th FA was present at all the Divisional engagements after travelling to France in March 1915.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It travelled to Ypres and established itself in a convent near Locre.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Within 7 days it had established a first Dressing Station jointly with 2nd. N Midland Field Ambulance (46th Division).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Bearers went up each night for 24 hours duty, brought back wounded, who were dressed and sent to CCS.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It serviced the Action at Hooge and the Second Attack on Bellewarde.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It witnessed<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>the first Gas attack at Langemarcke on 22 April.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>In June they re-located, first at La Clytte and then to the brickfields near Poperinghe.<\/p><p>In the 1916 Somme campaign it established a hospital in the Chateau at Fosseux for 200 cases.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It saw action at Delville Wood and the Battle of Flers-Courcelette.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>In early 1917, before the start of the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line, the winter had been bitterly cold.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The unit had transferred, in December, to Wanquetin in dreadfully cold weather, occupying corrugated huts in a compound nick-named the \u201cGood Ship Lucknow\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>There, Frank Adams died, probably of asphyxia.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This doleful event was recorded in a post-war book\u00a0<i>\u201cWith the 44ths\u201d \u2013 A record of the doings of 44th Field Ambulance, 14th Division:<\/i><\/p><p>\u201cA sensation was caused on the morning of 7th February when Frank Adams is found dead in his blanket.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It was thought that fumes from a crude coke fire caused his death by suffocation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>There was a unit Court of Enquiry, that concluded that he had had an accidental death from \u201cnatural causes\u201d<\/p><p>Private Frank Adams was buried at Wanquetin Communal Cemetery Extension at Plot I.B.17.<\/p><p>At the request of his family, his headstone was inscribed \u201cMy King, My Country\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> We have only scant knowledge of Frank Adam\u2019s vital records.\u00a0 From the record held by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission we know that he was aged\u00a0 27 at the time of his death in February 1917, and his father was \u00a0Edwin Adams who for some time towards the end of the War came to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":381,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-234","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-people"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Adams, F - St Michael &amp;
