Gleaming, well-polished brass has been a feature of St Michael’s over many years and is ‘a sign of a well-loved Church’, as I heard a visitor to St Michael’s saying just before Christmas.
The present small team of brass cleaners is doing its best to keep the tradition going, but there are only four of us. We usually meet on Thursday mornings in the Vestry, and it takes us about an hour and a half to have everything cleaned and polished to our satisfaction, longer when we clean all the memorial wall plaques, which happens every few weeks. Sometimes one of us can’t make a Thursday and will then come in at another time to clean some of the brass, leaving a note for the rest of the team of what has been done. At present it is often ‘all hands on deck’ on Thursdays and we would welcome some new recruits. We might then be able to organise a rota so we don’t all have to come every week! If you would like to join us, even on a fortnightly or monthly basis, please get in touch with me, Lis West, via the Parish Office. Job satisfaction guaranteed!
